The Conditional Tense 🔮

Formation

Add conditional endings to the infinitive:

yo	tú	él/ella	nosotros	ellos
-ía	-ías	-ía	-íamos	-ían

Regular Examples

hablar → hablaría, hablarías, hablaría...

comer → comería, comerías, comería...

vivir → viviría, vivirías, viviría...

Irregular Stems

Same as future tense irregulars:

decir → dir- → diría

hacer → har- → haría

poder → podr- → podría

querer → querr- → querría

saber → sabr- → sabría

tener → tendr- → tendría

venir → vendr- → vendría

Uses

1. Polite requests: Me gustaría un café (I would like a coffee)
2. Hypotheticals: Si tuviera dinero, viajaría (If I had money, I would travel)
3. Speculation: Serían las tres (It must have been 3 o'clock)
4. Future in the past: Dijo que vendría (He said he would come)

Si Clauses

Si + imperfect subjunctive, conditional: Si pudiera, lo haría

The condition uses imperfect subjunctive; the result uses conditional
